I bought an 80 Rabbit which was my first race car. It’s possible, it ran in this race. That Rabbit won a lot of races. The crappiest thing about Showroom Stock class was they did not allow race seats. This meant on hard right turns you would have to hang onto the passenger seat in order to stay in your seat.

The tires were tiny, the brakes were ineffective. I t was entertaining . As a comparison in the Rabbit I broke at the 4 marker at turn 5 at Road America. Today in a car that is 15 MPH faster, I am braking at the 1 1/2 marker and feel I could go even deeper......

I instantly recognized it as the run down to 5 at RA! A lot of the best memories are the ones from our glory days!

I imagine the old showroom stock cars took a second or two to pull up that long main straight at Road America, bet it was a blast to wind it out and toss it around.

Yep, it was just under 4 minutes as I recall. Now it’s like 3:30? The funny thing is it all seemed fast, even then. Also It seemed like every car I had was maybe fast enough to go almost flat through the kink. It was like the last lap of the weekend. But then a new car and I started all over again.

Yep, I would guess about 1988 or so. My buddy Tom came over from SCCA to run a council race. His Omni 2.2 vs my 1700 R abbit at the August or so Midwest Council race. I could carry more speed than him through the kink and carousel. He would catch me at Canada. and then I would gap him. Fun times. Notice I had BMW 320 4 x 100 wide offset wheel that were the hot deal for ITB (at that time) Rabbits.

Yep, I did a lot of racing back then. Maybe 9 weekends a year.

My uncle raced SCCA during that time. He had an Austin Healey Sprite...some really great memories! But boy, has the track changed over the years

Yep, I never drove it without the chicane before the bridge. A friend of mine ran there about in ‘82 in the Runoffs. He r an a Chevy Citation X-11 and said that turn really got his attention,.....
